How much does a violin cost?
I looked through the online catalog of Guitar Center at the prices of violins. The lowest price on the list that wasn't used was $83. The absolute lowest was $50, but indications were that they weren't of the best quality.
Guitars are similar. The lowest price for a guitar was $40. The lowest non-used guitar cost $50.
